Matara Stage IV water supply project (NWSDB)

A National Water Supply and Drainage Board scheme drawing on the Nilwala river to serve 12 divisional secretariat areas in Matara and part of Hambantota. Its design-and-build contract was ended by mutual agreement in January 2023 at 93.4% progress, so the remaining works are still to be completed.

• Planned to reach a further 285,000 people by 2046 on top of the 284,808 served by the Matara–Mirissa scheme.
• Contract with Kolon–Samsung C&T JV started on 11 October 2017; funded by a Rs. 35 bn NDB loan and Rs. 4 bn from the government.
• The NWSDB project page records the mutual termination on 31 January 2023 after budget shortfalls.
